Stop the Gag Reflex During Oral Sex with Acupressure: Expert Tips
Acupressure for Gag Reflex During Oral Sex: Expert Tips

If you are giving oral sex to a partner with a penis, you are likely familiar with the dreaded gag reflex — and the intrusive thought of potentially vomiting in an embarrassing manner. However, there is a simple, free, and low-risk method to potentially reduce this anxiety: acupressure.

Acupressure Points for Your Sex Life

The trick was first shared by a friend of a friend, but experts confirm its validity. Applying pressure to the webbing between your thumb and index finger can be a game changer. Maz Roginski, a practitioner of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, explains that this point, known as Large Intestine 4 (LI4) or Hegu, is located in the meatiest part of the webbing. “The stomach meridian runs through the stomach organ and up the throat to the mouth, so balancing this meridian can calm a gag reflex,” Roginski said. Both the pericardium and large intestine meridians share a connection to the stomach, making these points beneficial.

Other points can also help. Roginski and Sophie Roos, a licensed sexologist and relationship therapist, note that Pericardium 6 (P6 or Neiugan) and Conception Vessel 24 (CV24 or Chengjiang) can relieve the gag reflex. Roos explains: “Stimulating these points can relax the nervous system and act as a diversion, reducing sensitivity to the gag reflex.” P6 is located on the inside of the wrist, between two tendons, three fingers down from the wrist crease. CV24 is in the groove between the chin and lip. Research also suggests that stimulating the area in front of the ears with circles and pressure can prevent gagging. For best results, stimulate the pressure point during oral sex and for five minutes beforehand. Individual responses vary, so test different points and pressures.

How Acupressure Works

Roginski compares acupressure to using a switch to turn off a light bulb: “Our whole body is connected via meridians, which are circuitry connecting all aspects of our being. We have 14 main meridians, and some share close connections with organs.” While results vary, trying acupressure is low risk. Consult a doctor if pregnant, as LI4 is used to induce labor and is generally avoided during pregnancy.

Other Helpful Pressure Points

Additional stimulation points include the inner thighs, midline of the torso (belly and chest), and soles of the feet. Roos suggests pressing the inner thigh to increase blood flow to the genital area and massaging the neck and shoulders to reduce stress. Kidney 1 (KD1) on the sole of the foot can charge sexual energy, and points on the CV meridian (midline of belly and chest) may spark extra energy. However, results vary; some people feel a big difference, while others notice little change.
