Manitoba Man and Officers Rescue Moose Trapped in Ice on Bird River
Moose Rescue: Manitoba Man, Officers Free Animal from Ice

A Manitoba man and three conservation officers successfully rescued a moose that became trapped in ice on the Bird River. The operation, described as a 'dangerous situation,' required the team to clear approximately 100 yards of ice to free the distressed animal.

Russ Popp, a local resident, spotted the moose struggling in the frozen river and immediately contacted conservation officers. Together, they worked for hours to break through the thick ice, creating a path for the moose to escape. The animal was eventually freed and quickly disappeared into the surrounding forest, apparently unharmed.

Conservation officers emphasized that such rescues are risky for both humans and animals, as ice conditions can be unpredictable. They advised the public to report wildlife emergencies rather than attempting rescues themselves.

The incident highlights the challenges wildlife face during spring thaw, when ice becomes unstable. Moose are particularly vulnerable as they often travel along river corridors.
