Thai Man Fined for Trespassing in Viral Hippo Moo Deng's Zoo Enclosure
A man in Thailand has been fined for trespassing after he climbed into the enclosure housing Moo Deng, the pygmy hippo who became a global social media sensation. The incident occurred at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province, where Moo Deng has drawn record crowds since her viral fame began.
Surveillance Footage Captures Trespassing Incident
On March 17, surveillance footage captured the unidentified man climbing into Moo Deng's enclosure while visitors and zookeepers were not present. The man was seen taking photographs of the pygmy hippos using a tablet device before climbing back out of the enclosure.
Narongwit Chodchoy, director of the Khao Kheow Open Zoo, confirmed that a local court found the man guilty of trespassing. According to reports from Singaporean news network CNA, the trespasser was fined 10,000 baht, which is approximately US$300.
Increased Security Measures Implemented
Following the trespassing incident, the zoo has implemented additional security measures to protect Moo Deng and other animals. Chodchoy emphasized that animal rights must be respected whether animals are in enclosures or in the wild, and the court decision reflects this principle.
"We train staff on what to do if any animals escape, but from now on, we will have to train them on what to do if there are any intruders," said Chodchoy in an interview with the BBC. "We learned from this lesson and will not allow it to happen again — not to Moo Deng and not to other animals in the zoo."
Moo Deng's Rise to Viral Fame
Moo Deng, whose name means "bouncy pork" in Thai, was born on July 10, 2024, and quickly became an internet sensation after her keeper shared adorable photos and videos online. The pygmy hippo's popularity has transformed the zoo into a major tourist attraction, with thousands of visitors arriving daily to see the charismatic animal.
The zoo's management has responded to the overwhelming interest by:
- Selling Moo Deng-themed merchandise
- Partnering with Thai brands for promotional campaigns
- Limiting visitor viewing time to just five minutes to reduce wait times
Moo Deng's viral fame has provided a significant boost to the local economy, demonstrating how social media can create unexpected tourism opportunities. The zoo continues to balance public access with animal welfare concerns, particularly after this security breach.
