Highway 404 near Newmarket has fully reopened after a serious crash forced the closure of all southbound lanes early Tuesday morning, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.
Crash Details and Response
The collision occurred on Highway 404 southbound near Davis Drive in Newmarket, approximately 40 kilometres north of Toronto. OPP officers responded to the scene around 5:30 a.m. EDT on June 23, 2026. Emergency crews, including paramedics and fire services, were dispatched to assist. At least two vehicles were involved, but the exact number has not been confirmed by authorities.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in a social media post that the crash resulted in significant damage and debris scattered across the roadway. “All southbound lanes were blocked to allow for investigation and cleanup,” Schmidt wrote. “Motorists were advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes.”
Reopening and Delays
The highway fully reopened by 7:00 a.m. after crews completed the investigation and cleared the wreckage. However, residual delays persisted for several hours as traffic backed up along major detour routes, including Davis Drive and Yonge Street. The OPP reported no serious injuries, but a few individuals were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
According to OPP data, Highway 404 between Toronto and Newmarket has seen a 12% increase in collisions year-over-year, with many attributed to distracted driving and speeding. This incident is under investigation, and charges may be pending.
Impact on Commuters
The closure caused significant disruptions for morning commuters traveling from Newmarket and surrounding areas into Toronto. Many drivers reported delays of up to 45 minutes. Local transit services, including GO Transit buses, experienced minor rerouting but maintained regular schedules.
“We urge all drivers to remain cautious and reduce speed in construction zones and high-traffic areas,” Schmidt added. The OPP continues to remind motorists to obey speed limits and avoid distractions behind the wheel.
