Calgary Water Consumption Surpasses Daily Target Amid Critical Infrastructure Repairs
After maintaining water usage within acceptable limits for six consecutive days under Stage 4 restrictions, Calgary residents exceeded the city's conservation target for the first time on Sunday. This development comes as crucial reinforcement work continues on the damaged Bearspaw South feeder main, a vital component of the city's water distribution system.
Water Usage Statistics and Official Response
At a Monday news briefing, Michael Thompson, general manager of infrastructure services, revealed that Calgarians consumed 504 million litres of water on Sunday. This represents a significant increase from Saturday's consumption of 488 million litres and exceeds the city's target of maintaining daily usage below 500 million litres until the feeder main returns to service in early April.
"We get it, and one day in the red does not undo the excellent work we all did through last week," Thompson stated, acknowledging the temporary setback. "We still have three weeks to go before the feeder main is back in service, so today, I want to ask you to start Week 2 strong."
Thompson noted that Sunday's increased consumption was not entirely unexpected, as weekends typically see higher water usage due to household activities like laundry and cleaning in preparation for the work week.
Recent Incidents Highlight Conservation Importance
Two separate incidents over the weekend underscored the critical need for continued water conservation efforts throughout the repair period:
- A boil-water advisory affecting approximately 500 homes and properties in the Wildwood, Rosscarrock, and Spruce Cliff neighborhoods required approximately two million litres of water for system flushing and water quality testing after a private property water service line break.
- A substantial structure fire at the Manchester Industrial Park on Monday morning consumed more than seven million litres of water for firefighting operations.
"These are the kinds of situations that make it so important that we have a sufficient supply of treated water in our underground storage tanks," Thompson emphasized. "Because of the actions you took last week to save water, we had enough available in our underground storage tanks to deal with these two issues."
Continued Conservation Measures and Practical Tips
With Stage 4 water restrictions remaining in effect until the feeder main restoration is complete next month, city officials are urging both households and businesses to identify additional ways to reduce indoor water consumption. The city has established a goal of reducing personal water usage by 25 litres per day.
Thompson provided specific examples of how residents can achieve these savings:
- Each skipped toilet flush conserves approximately five litres of water
- Reducing shower time by one minute saves up to eight litres
- Dishwashers typically use 28 litres per cycle
- Front-loading washing machines consume approximately 62 litres per cycle
The ongoing concrete reinforcement work on the Bearspaw South feeder main represents a critical infrastructure project for Calgary's water system. City workers have been engaged in repair efforts since the damage was identified, with the project timeline extending through early April before normal service can resume.
