Alberta Health Services (AHS) has issued a blue-green algae advisory for Lac Ste. Anne, warning the public to avoid swimming or wading in the water where blooms are visible. The advisory, announced on June 26, 2026, follows reports of cyanobacteria blooms in parts of the lake and along the shoreline.
Health Risks and Precautions
Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can produce toxins that are harmful to humans and animals. According to AHS, contact with the algae or ingestion of contaminated water can cause skin irritation, sore throat, headaches, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Pets and livestock are particularly vulnerable and should be kept away from the water.
Officials recommend avoiding any areas where algae blooms are present, and not drinking or using the lake water for cooking or bathing. Boating and fishing may still be safe if the water is not visibly affected, but fish should be cleaned thoroughly.
Monitoring and Reporting
AHS continues to monitor water quality at Lac Ste. Anne and other recreational lakes across Alberta. Residents are encouraged to report sightings of blue-green algae blooms to the local health authority. The advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
This is a developing story. More information can be found on the AHS website.
