Windsor Launches Recycling Bin Pickup Program for Old Red and Blue Containers

The City of Windsor has announced a convenient solution for residents wondering what to do with their outdated plastic recycling bins. A new collection program will allow Windsor homeowners to simply place their old red and blue recycling containers at the curb for pickup.

Registration Required for February Collection

City residents must register online through the official city website to participate in this special collection initiative. The registration deadline is set for 11:59 p.m. on February 8, with the actual collection scheduled for February 10. This program provides Windsor homeowners with an easy way to dispose of recycling containers that have become obsolete under recent changes to Ontario's recycling system.

Partnership with Circular Materials

The bin collection program represents a collaboration between the City of Windsor and Circular Materials, the non-profit organization that assumed management of recycling across Ontario effective January 1. This partnership ensures proper handling and disposal of the outdated containers as Windsor transitions to a standardized recycling system.

Transition to New Recycling System

In October, Circular Materials distributed 360-litre wheeled blue bins to households throughout Windsor and Essex County. These larger containers have replaced the various recycling receptacles residents previously used, including the familiar red and blue boxes. The new standardized bins are now the only recycling containers accepted for curbside collection in Windsor.

Important Program Requirements

The collection program comes with specific requirements that residents must follow:

  • All bins must be completely empty before collection
  • No materials can be stuck inside or on the containers
  • Bins must be placed at the curb before 6 a.m. on February 10

Containers that fail to meet these criteria may be refused during the collection process. It's important to note that the new wheeled blue bins distributed in October are excluded from this pickup program.

Options for Different Household Needs

Windsor-Essex residents who find the standard 360-litre blue cart too large for their household needs have alternatives available. Circular Materials offers a smaller 240-litre cart option that residents can request by completing a form on the organization's website. This flexibility ensures the recycling system accommodates various household sizes and needs.

Provincewide Recycling Changes

These developments reflect broader changes to Ontario's recycling program that affect communities across the province. Under the new system, residents now combine all recyclable materials into the larger bins provided by Circular Materials, eliminating the previous requirement to separate materials into different colored containers.

Despite these container changes, recycling collection in Windsor continues on its established schedule of every other week. The city's commitment to proper waste management remains consistent even as the physical containers and collection systems evolve to meet modern environmental standards.
