Snider Park: New Green Space to Energize Centretown

Centretown is set to welcome a vibrant new green space as Snider Park prepares to open its doors on June 13. The urban park, located at 150 Bank Street, is designed to serve as a neighborhood hub for gathering, public art, and community programming in the heart of Ottawa.

Kyle Ratchford, owner and operator of Ahh!!! Coffee on Bayswater Avenue, expressed enthusiasm about the park's potential. "It's an important injection of energy into a neighbourhood that maybe hasn't had the best go of it in the last few years," he said. Ratchford and his team have been invited to run a "park café" within Snider Park, adding a welcoming social element to the space.

A Hub for Community Connection

The Centretown Business Improvement Area (BIA) has transformed a former event space into this colorful urban park. According to the BIA, the park was "created to reflect the art, culture, creativity and community that define the neighbourhood." The space will feature free public WiFi and serve as a venue for art, live performances, and community events.

"We created this space because strong communities are built around places made for people," the Centretown BIA stated on social media. "Places to meet up, slow down, work outside, listen to music, grab a coffee, connect with neighbours, or simply exist comfortably in the middle of the city."

Pilot Year with Permanent Ambitions

While Snider Park is currently in its pilot year, there are intentions to make it a permanent fixture. Ratchford emphasized the importance of such "third spaces" in any community. "Third spaces are incredibly important part of any community," he noted.

The official opening on June 13 will be celebrated with a pizza party and taco fest from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., offering a taste of the vibrant community programming the park aims to host.

Snider Park represents a renewed effort to revitalize downtown Ottawa, providing a much-needed green oasis for residents, workers, and visitors alike.
