Windsor-Essex is bracing for a scorching Canada Day, with temperatures forecast to reach 37°C, according to Environment Canada. The extreme heat warning, issued early Tuesday, covers the region as residents prepare for outdoor celebrations.
Heat Warning Details
The warning, in effect from late morning through evening, cites a humid air mass pushing temperatures into the mid-30s, with humidex values making it feel near 40°C. Environment Canada meteorologist Trudy Kidd said, 'This is a short but intense burst of heat. People need to take precautions, especially during outdoor activities.'
Overnight lows will offer little relief, dropping only to around 20°C. The heat is expected to break by Wednesday as a cold front moves through.
Safety Precautions
Officials urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during peak heat, and never leave people or pets in parked vehicles. Cooling centers will be open across Windsor and Essex County, including at the WFCU Centre and community centers.
Windsor-Essex Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ken Blanchette stated, 'Heat-related illnesses can escalate quickly. Check on vulnerable neighbors and relatives.'
Canada Day Celebrations
Despite the heat, Canada Day events are proceeding as planned, with many adding misting stations and extra water stations. The main celebration at Riverfront Festival Plaza will feature shaded areas and free water refill stations.
Fireworks are scheduled for 10 p.m., when temperatures are expected to have dropped slightly. Organizers advise attendees to bring sunscreen, hats, and umbrellas.
