Toronto residents should enjoy a comfortable weekend before a scorching heat wave arrives next week, with temperatures expected to soar into the mid-30s Celsius, according to Environment Canada.
Weekend Relief Before the Heat
The upcoming weekend will bring pleasant conditions, with highs around 25°C and low humidity. However, this reprieve will be short-lived as a heat dome settles over the region starting Monday.
Environment Canada meteorologist David Phillips said, "It's going to be a shock to the system. After a nice, comfortable weekend, we're looking at temperatures that could feel like 40 with the humidity."
Details of the Heat Wave
The heat wave is expected to begin Monday, July 13, with daytime highs reaching 33°C, and will intensify through midweek. By Wednesday, July 15, temperatures could hit 36°C, with humidex values making it feel like 42°C. Overnight lows will offer little relief, staying above 20°C.
City officials are activating cooling centers and reminding residents to stay hydrated, check on vulnerable neighbors, and never leave people or pets in parked vehicles. The extreme heat poses health risks, particularly for seniors, young children, and those with chronic conditions.
Impact and Precautions
The prolonged heat wave may strain the power grid as air conditioning use surges. Toronto Hydro is preparing for potential outages and urges conservation during peak hours. Public health officials advise limiting outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wearing lightweight clothing, and using sunscreen.
Last summer, a similar heat wave contributed to several heat-related deaths in the city. Authorities are urging caution to prevent a repeat this year.
