Tornado Confirmed in East-Central Saskatchewan
Environment Canada has confirmed that a tornado touched down in east-central Saskatchewan on June 28, 2026, as part of a severe thunderstorm outbreak. The tornado was reported near the town of Ituna, approximately 150 kilometers northeast of Regina, at around 3:38 PM EDT. Storm chaser Braydon Morisseau captured video of the funnel cloud and subsequent damage.
Details of the Severe Weather Event
The tornado was part of a larger system that produced damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rain across southeastern Saskatchewan. Environment Canada issued tornado warnings for several communities, including Melville, Yorkton, and Esterhazy. The agency urged residents to take shelter as the storm moved eastward at 50 km/h. Preliminary reports indicate downed power lines, uprooted trees, and structural damage to farm buildings, but no injuries have been confirmed as of late evening.
Impact and Response
Local emergency services are assessing the damage and advising residents to stay clear of debris. Saskatchewan Power Corporation reported outages affecting approximately 1,200 customers in the affected area. Environment Canada meteorologist Sarah Hoffman stated, "This was a classic supercell thunderstorm that produced a brief but intense tornado. We are grateful there have been no reports of injuries." The storm system is expected to move into Manitoba overnight, where a tornado watch remains in effect for western Manitoba.
