After a few days of calm weather, southern Alberta is bracing for a stormy stretch. The winds have picked up across Calgary this afternoon, and much of southeastern Alberta is under a severe thunderstorm watch.
Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued
At 1:33 p.m., Environment Canada issued an orange severe thunderstorm warning east of Strathmore. Meteorologists are tracking a dangerous storm capable of producing damaging wind gusts and ping-pong-sized hail. The warning states that significant damage to buildings and trees is likely, and large hail could cause significant damage and injury.
The warning is in effect for areas including Siksika First Nation, Cluny, and Bassano. Video posted to #ABstorm on X shows high winds and reduced visibility on the Trans-Canada Highway near Strathmore.
Calgary Under Thunderstorm Watch
A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for Calgary at 10:18 a.m., calling for thunderstorms this afternoon and evening capable of producing high wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain. Environment Canada noted there is also a slight chance of a tornado.
The unsettled weather is forecast to continue for the rest of the week with cooler temperatures.
