Environment Canada has issued thunderstorm warnings and a tornado watch for multiple regions in Saskatchewan as a powerful storm system sweeps across the province. The alerts cover a wide area, including communities near Rocanville, where intense lightning strikes were reported on June 7, 2026.
Severe Weather Prompts Emergency Declarations
Thirteen Saskatchewan communities have declared states of emergency due to widespread flooding caused by the storms. Crews are responding to rising water levels and damage to infrastructure, with some areas experiencing over 118 mm of rain, similar to the deluge that flooded 1,900 basements in Ottawa.
According to Environment Canada, the tornado watch means conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes. Residents are advised to monitor alerts and take shelter if a warning is issued.
Impact on Agricultural and Mining Operations
In addition to urban flooding, the storms have disrupted key industries. Cameco's Cigar Lake mine has halted operations as its processing mill undergoes repairs after the weather event. The company has not yet provided a timeline for resumption.
“We are assessing the situation and prioritizing safety,” a Cameco spokesperson said. The mine is one of the world's largest uranium producers.
The storm also threatens agricultural areas, with heavy rain and hail potentially damaging crops. Farmers are urged to secure equipment and livestock.
Transportation and Community Safety
Highway 402 at Reece’s Corners remains closed due to flooding, with officials warning that conditions could worsen. “Eventually it’s just going to pop,” a local official said, referring to the risk of a washout.
Residents in affected areas are advised to avoid travel unless necessary and to stay away from swollen waterways. Emergency services are on standby, and sandbags have been distributed in some communities.
