Ottawa Apartment Residents Evacuated After Record Rainstorm

Residents of a 25-floor apartment building on McEwen Avenue in Ottawa were forced to evacuate after a record-breaking rainstorm caused extensive flooding damage. The building remains without power as of July 2, 2026, leaving hundreds scrambling for alternative accommodations.

Record Rainfall Overwhelms Infrastructure

The storm dumped 118 mm of rain on Ottawa, leading to approximately 1,900 basements flooded across the city. The unprecedented volume overwhelmed drainage systems and caused severe damage to the apartment building's electrical and mechanical systems.

According to CTV's Dylan Dyson, the situation has left residents in a precarious position, with no clear timeline for when they can return. Emergency services have been deployed to assist with temporary housing and essential supplies.

Wider Impact Across the Region

The storm also triggered a tornado warning for Ingleside, Ontario, and severe thunderstorm warnings for Ottawa, which have since been lifted. However, a thunderstorm watch remains in effect. In Saskatchewan, 13 communities declared states of emergency due to flooding, and storm conditions brought an early end to Canada Day celebrations in Brantford.

Ten people were rescued from Guelph Lake after a sudden thunderstorm, and cleanup efforts are underway in Simcoe County following a storm that ripped through the area.

Ongoing Challenges for Displaced Residents

Residents of the McEwen Avenue apartment face uncertainty as building management works with city officials to assess the damage. Power restoration is a priority, but the extent of the flooding has complicated repairs. The city has opened temporary shelters and is coordinating with local organizations to provide support.

“This is a devastating situation for our residents,” said a spokesperson for the building management. “We are doing everything we can to ensure their safety and expedite the restoration process.”
