Mass Power Outages Throughout Windsor-Essex After Storm

Hydro One reports that severe thunderstorms swept through Windsor-Essex early Saturday morning, leaving thousands of residents without power. The outages began around 2:00 AM EDT, with the hardest-hit areas including Windsor, Tecumseh, and LaSalle. As of 10:00 AM, approximately 15,000 customers remain affected, down from a peak of 28,000.

Cause and Response

According to Hydro One spokesperson Maria Gomez, the outages were primarily caused by lightning strikes and high winds that downed power lines and damaged several transformers. “Our crews are working around the clock to restore power, but some areas may not see electricity return until late Sunday due to the extent of the damage,” Gomez stated.

Emergency services have been deployed to assist vulnerable residents, including those dependent on medical equipment. The Windsor-Essex Red Cross has opened two warming centers at the WFCU Centre and the Essex Centre Sports Complex for those without power.

Impact on Community

Local businesses have been forced to close, including Devonshire Mall, which shut down due to power issues. Schools in the region have announced delays for Monday pending power restoration. Traffic lights are out at major intersections, and police are directing traffic. Residents are advised to avoid downed power lines and report them immediately to Hydro One at 1-800-434-1235.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the region, with temperatures expected to reach 32°C (90°F) with high humidity. The combination of heat and power outages poses a health risk, especially for seniors and those with chronic conditions. Cooling centers are open at various community centers throughout the day.

Historical Context and Preparedness

This is the most significant power outage in Windsor-Essex since the 2023 ice storm, which left 50,000 customers without power for up to five days. Hydro One has invested $1.2 billion in grid modernization over the past three years, but officials acknowledge that extreme weather events continue to challenge infrastructure. “We are reviewing our emergency response protocols to improve resilience,” said Gomez.

Residents are encouraged to conserve cell phone battery, check on neighbors, and stay updated via Hydro One’s outage map. Power restoration updates will be provided every four hours.
