Significant Rainfall Event Forecast for Ottawa Region
Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for the Ottawa area, predicting a substantial precipitation event beginning Sunday afternoon and persisting into midweek. The national weather agency forecasts that the capital region will receive between 20 and 30 millimeters of rain by Monday evening, with conditions expected to continue through Thursday, potentially with a brief respite on Wednesday.
Ground Conditions Heighten Flood Risk
The agency emphasized that the frozen or nearly saturated ground in the region has a reduced capacity to absorb this incoming rainfall, increasing the risk of localized flooding. Rain is anticipated to move into the Ottawa area late Sunday afternoon and persist through Monday afternoon, with the possibility of thunderstorms affecting portions of the region.
Flood Watch Issued for Surrounding Watersheds
Outside Ottawa, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority has already activated a flood watch for the Tay Valley and Rideau Lakes regions. This precautionary measure is in response to elevated water levels in the upper watershed. The conservation authority noted that a sustained warming trend over the next ten days, with temperatures consistently above freezing, is expected to continue snowmelt and runoff, further contributing to water level concerns.
The flood watch will remain in effect until April 22, as authorities monitor the situation closely. Environment Canada's warning highlights the potential for significant weather impacts across the region, urging residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
