Frost Advisories Issued for Parts of Greater Toronto Area and Southern Ontario

Environment Canada and Climate Change Canada issued a frost advisory on Monday for parts of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and a large portion of Southern Ontario. The advisory warns of patchy frost expected overnight and into early Tuesday morning, potentially damaging plants, trees, and crops.

The advisory covers several municipalities in the GTA, including Markham, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Caledon, Pickering, Oshawa, and Uxbridge. However, the City of Toronto itself is not included in the frost advisory. Additionally, parts of Southwestern Ontario, such as Hamilton, Waterloo, Guelph, Kitchener, and London, are also under a frost advisory.

Chilly Temperatures Expected

According to The Weather Network, temperatures from London to Guelph could drop as low as –3C or –4C early Tuesday morning, described as “an exceptional chill for this time of year.” The agency warned that damage to plants, trees, and crops is possible and advised residents in frost-prone areas to cover up plants.

In the GTA, temperatures will get dangerously close to the freezing mark, with forecasts showing the thermometer dropping to 2C overnight and 4C Tuesday morning. Normal temperatures for this time of year in Toronto are a high of 18C and a low of 8C, according to Environment Canada.

Other Affected Areas

Frost advisories have also been issued in parts of Southeastern Ontario, covering Belleville and Ottawa. While the week is off to a frigid start, Environment Canada’s forecast shows Toronto will finally warm up for the Victoria Day long weekend, with a high of 21C expected on Friday, rising to 22C on Saturday and Sunday.

Residents are advised to take precautions to protect sensitive plants and outdoor items from the frost. The cold snap is unusual for mid-May, but warmer weather is expected later in the week.
