Edmonton's mosquito population is expected to remain 'relatively low' this year, even with recent moisture, according to the city's pest management coordinator Mike Jenkins. In a statement, Jenkins provided tips for Edmontonians to consider in order to minimize mosquito breeding around their properties.
City’s outlook on mosquito season
Despite the rain that has fallen in recent weeks, the city anticipates that mosquito numbers will not spike dramatically. Jenkins explained that the type of mosquitoes common in Edmonton require specific conditions for breeding, and the recent weather patterns have not been ideal for large populations.
Tips for residents
Jenkins encouraged residents to eliminate standing water on their properties, such as in flower pots, bird baths, and clogged gutters. He also recommended using mosquito repellent and wearing long sleeves during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
The city will continue to monitor mosquito levels and apply larvicide in standing water areas where necessary. For more information, residents can visit the city's website.
