Chilliwack RCMP have arrested one individual in connection with a fire that broke out along the Vedder River near the Vedder River Campground, police confirmed on June 30, 2026. The arrest follows an investigation into the blaze, which prompted a response from local fire crews and law enforcement.

Fire Details and Response

The fire was reported in the late afternoon on June 29, 2026, in a wooded area adjacent to the campground, a popular recreational spot in the Fraser Valley Regional District. Firefighters from Chilliwack Fire Department contained the flames within hours, preventing spread to nearby structures. No injuries were reported.

Police stated that the fire is believed to have been intentionally set. “The investigation led us to identify and arrest a suspect quickly,” said Corporal Mike Rail, spokesperson for Chilliwack RCMP. “We are grateful for the public’s assistance in this matter.”

Suspect in Custody

The suspect, whose name has not been released pending charges, remains in custody. Authorities are recommending charges of arson, which could carry a maximum sentence of 14 years if convicted. The motive is under investigation.

“We take any threat to public safety and our natural environment very seriously,” added Rail. “This fire could have endangered campers and wildlife.”

Impact and Community Response

The Vedder River area is a key ecological and recreational zone. The fire scorched approximately 0.5 hectares of riparian forest, according to the BC Wildfire Service. Campers were temporarily evacuated but allowed to return after the fire was extinguished.

Local resident Sarah Mitchell, who was camping nearby, said, “We saw smoke and heard sirens. It was scary, but the firefighters did an amazing job.” The incident has raised concerns about fire risk during the dry summer months.
