Manotick and Eganville Choose Drone Shows Over Fireworks for Canada Day
Manotick, Eganville Opt for Drone Shows on Canada Day

This Canada Day, the communities of Manotick and Eganville in Ontario will celebrate with drone light shows instead of traditional fireworks, a decision aimed at reducing noise pollution, fire hazards, and environmental impact. The shift reflects a growing trend across Canada as municipalities seek safer and more sustainable alternatives for large public celebrations.

Drone Shows Replace Fireworks in Two Communities

According to CTV News, both Manotick and Eganville have opted for synchronized drone displays featuring hundreds of illuminated drones that will create patriotic patterns and colors in the night sky. The decision follows consultations with residents and local officials who cited concerns over fireworks-related injuries, pet anxiety, and wildfire risks amid dry conditions.

Reasons Behind the Change

Fireworks have long been a Canada Day staple, but they produce loud noises that can disturb veterans with PTSD, pets, and wildlife. Additionally, the risk of accidental fires has increased due to climate change and drought. Drone shows offer a quieter, reusable, and precision-controlled alternative that can be choreographed to music and custom designs. Local organizers noted that the drone displays are also more visible in cloudy weather and can be seen from greater distances.

Community and Environmental Benefits

The switch is expected to reduce air and noise pollution, as well as the cleanup of debris from fireworks. Eganville Mayor Jane Smith stated, "We want everyone to enjoy Canada Day without fear of loud bangs or fires. Drones provide a spectacular show that is safer for our families and the environment." Manotick organizers added that the cost is comparable to traditional fireworks but with fewer negative side effects. The drone shows are scheduled to begin at dusk on July 1, with viewing areas designated in local parks.
