The Municipality of Central Elgin confirmed that lifeguards are now on duty, providing a crucial safety net for residents and visitors flocking to the Lake Erie shoreline.
Heat wave prompts early deployment
The decision to station lifeguards now aligns with forecasts predicting soaring temperatures across the region. Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for much of southwestern Ontario, with humidex values expected to exceed 40°C in the coming days. The early deployment aims to prevent drownings and heat-related incidents as beach attendance surges.
"We want everyone to enjoy the beach safely," said a Central Elgin official. "Having lifeguards present during this heat wave is essential." The municipality reminds beachgoers to swim only in designated areas and follow lifeguard instructions.
Beach safety tips
Officials advise visitors to stay hydrated, apply sunscreen, and never swim alone. The beach is open daily from dawn to dusk, with lifeguard hours typically 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the summer season.
