GlobalFest, Calgary's iconic fireworks festival, is returning this year with major changes, including a new location at Spruce Meadows and the addition of Alberta's largest drone show. Organizers promise a bigger and better event than ever before.
Drone Show to Complement Fireworks
For the first time, the festival will feature 600 drones that will illuminate the sky with images and stories that fireworks cannot convey. "They don't replace the fireworks — they augment what we do," said Ken Goosen, GlobalFest's Chief Operating Officer. "It will blow people away."
The drone show will precede the nightly fireworks displays, adding a new dimension to the festival. Laura MacFarlane, marketing and communications coordinator at Showpass, described the event as "so much more than just fireworks," highlighting cultural, food, and drink aspects for a family-friendly experience.
Move to Spruce Meadows
After a decline in attendance — from 64,000 in 2024 to 53,000 in 2025 — GlobalFest decided to relocate from Elliston Park to Spruce Meadows. Factors included rainy weather, rising costs, and political tensions surrounding the U.S. opening night. "We needed to find a sustainable model to move GlobalFest forward," Goosen said. The new venue offers room for growth and enhanced guest experiences through food, drink, and live performances.
Devin Morrison, strategic advisor at Spruce Meadows, called the move "massive" and said the grounds are well-suited for the festival. "We're always looking to expand our offering to a broader base," he added.
GlobalFest will run for four consecutive nights at Spruce Meadows, with more surprises to be announced. Organizers are optimistic about the future, aiming to sustain the festival for years to come.
