Flood Watch: Bow River Communities Prepare for Potential Flooding

Communities along the Bow River are bracing for potential flooding as a combination of melting alpine snowpack and heavy rainfall threatens to raise water levels over the weekend and into next week. A flood watch remains in effect for the Bow River and Pipestone River near Lake Louise, particularly impacting low-lying areas. Officials have observed increased debris in the Bow River, and water levels are expected to continue rising.

High Streamflow Advisory Issued

A high streamflow advisory is also in effect for the Bow River from upstream of the town of Banff to Ghost Reservoir. An additional 30-centimetre increase is anticipated throughout Friday, which could affect low-lying areas in Banff and potentially cause groundwater issues in Canmore and Exshaw. Authorities are urging residents in these regions to stay vigilant and prepare for possible flooding.

Updated Rainfall Forecast

Earlier forecasts predicted up to 90 millimetres of rainfall in Banff National Park between Saturday and Tuesday. However, an updated weather statement Saturday morning now expects total rainfall to be between 30 and 60 millimetres. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast for the Banff area through Saturday and Sunday, generating 5 to 10 millimetres. Heavier rain beginning Sunday night could bring 20 to 40 millimetres by Tuesday, with some areas receiving up to 60 millimetres. Higher terrain may see snowfall on Monday and Tuesday, with accumulations of 10 to 20 centimetres.

Provincial Response

Premier Danielle Smith, speaking on her QR Calgary radio show Saturday morning, stated that the province will monitor potential flooding over the weekend. “We step in when the local agencies get overwhelmed, so we’ve been on standby,” she said. “I’m told we’re watching it this weekend, but at the moment, there’s not the level of risk like we would have had back in 2013. If that changes, we’ll make sure everybody knows.”

Calgary Precautionary Measures

A boating advisory is in effect for the Bow and Elbow rivers in Calgary, advising residents to stay off the rivers and exercise caution near riverbanks. The Calgary Fire Department reported Friday that water flow rates have exceeded safe levels and are expected to rise with incoming rainfall. Environment Canada forecasts scattered showers throughout Saturday in the Calgary area, with heavier rainfall from Sunday to Tuesday potentially reaching 30 to 60 millimetres.

As a precaution, water levels in the Glenmore Reservoir have been reduced by approximately one metre. City officials said Friday that conditions will be closely monitored over the weekend. Some pathways, especially those passing under bridges, have already been closed, and more closures are expected. Residents are advised to stay informed and avoid flood-prone areas.
