Vancouver Among World's Most Livable Cities: Report

Vancouver has been recognized as one of the most livable cities in the world, according to a new report released this week. The ranking highlights the city's exceptional natural environment, robust economy, and high standard of living.

What Makes Vancouver Stand Out

The report, compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), evaluates cities across five categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Vancouver scored particularly high in culture and environment, thanks to its stunning coastal and mountain scenery, as well as its vibrant arts scene. The city also performed well in infrastructure, with efficient public transit and extensive green spaces.

“Vancouver consistently ranks among the top cities globally due to its unique blend of urban amenities and access to nature,” said a spokesperson for the EIU. “Residents enjoy a high quality of life, with excellent healthcare and education systems.”

Comparison with Other Canadian Cities

Vancouver was not the only Canadian city to make the list. Toronto and Calgary also ranked in the top 20, reflecting Canada's overall strong performance in livability. However, Vancouver's top-tier ranking places it ahead of many global competitors, including Melbourne, Vienna, and Zurich.

Despite its high ranking, Vancouver faces challenges such as high housing costs and traffic congestion. The report notes that affordability remains a concern, but the city's overall livability remains strong.

Global Context

The EIU's Global Livability Index for 2026 includes 173 cities worldwide. The top spot was claimed by Vienna, Austria, followed by Copenhagen, Denmark, and Melbourne, Australia. Vancouver ranked fourth, tying with Zurich, Switzerland.

The report also noted that cities in the Asia-Pacific region have seen improvements in livability due to post-pandemic recovery efforts. European cities continue to dominate the top rankings, with stable healthcare and infrastructure.

“Vancouver's ranking is a testament to its resilience and commitment to sustainability,” added the EIU spokesperson. “The city's green initiatives and focus on community well-being are key factors in its high score.”
