A Muslim cultural centre in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, was vandalized overnight, according to police and community leaders.
The Islamic Cultural Centre of Mauricie, located in the city's downtown area, had its windows smashed and graffiti spray-painted on the building. The vandalism was discovered early Wednesday morning.
Mohamed Toubal, a spokesperson for the centre, said the damage is extensive and estimated repairs could cost thousands of dollars. He expressed disappointment and concern over the incident, calling it an act of hatred.
Trois-Rivières police say they are investigating the vandalism as a hate-motivated crime. Officers are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Local leaders and community members have condemned the attack. The mayor of Trois-Rivières issued a statement expressing solidarity with the Muslim community and promising a thorough investigation.
This incident comes amid a rise in hate crimes targeting religious minorities across Canada. Advocacy groups are calling for stronger measures to protect places of worship and promote tolerance.
The centre has been a hub for the local Muslim community, offering prayer services, educational programs, and cultural events. It has faced previous incidents of vandalism, but community members say this is the most severe.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
