Environment Canada has lifted a tornado warning that was issued for parts of southern Ontario on Thursday, but a severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for much of the region. The warning, which covered areas including London, Sarnia, and Windsor, was dropped by early evening, according to the weather agency.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch Continues
The severe thunderstorm watch continues for a broad swath of southern Ontario, from the Bruce Peninsula to Lake Erie and east toward the Greater Toronto Area. Environment Canada warns that conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that could produce strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain. The watch is expected to remain in effect into the night.
According to meteorologists, the storms are being driven by a cold front moving across the region, colliding with warm, humid air. This combination is expected to bring a risk of damaging winds up to 90 km/h and nickel-sized hail. Localized flooding is also possible in areas with heavy downpours.
Previous Tornado Warning Details
The tornado warning was issued earlier Thursday afternoon for areas including London, St. Thomas, and Strathroy. Environment Canada warned that a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was detected near West Lorne, moving east at 50 km/h. Residents were advised to take cover immediately. The warning was lifted after the storm weakened and no longer posed a tornado threat.
"This was a rapidly developing situation, and we are relieved that no tornado materialized," said a spokesperson for Environment Canada. "However, the severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect, and residents should continue to monitor alerts."
Safety Precautions
Authorities urge residents to stay informed by monitoring weather alerts and to take shelter if a warning is issued. During a tornado warning, the safest place is in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows. For severe thunderstorms, it is recommended to stay indoors and avoid using electrical appliances.
