A third tornado has been confirmed following the severe storms that swept through areas east of London, Ontario, on May 28. The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) identified the tornado as an EF0, with maximum wind speeds estimated at 115 km/h. The tornado touched down near Salford, causing damage primarily to a barn roof, as captured in drone imagery.
Details of the Confirmed Tornado
The NTP team conducted a ground and aerial survey of the damage path, which extended for about 2 kilometers. The main impact was observed on a farm property, where a large metal barn roof was partially torn off and scattered across the field. No injuries were reported, and no structural damage to homes was noted.
Previous Tornadoes in the Region
This confirmation follows two earlier tornadoes that were confirmed after the same storm system. An EF1 tornado was confirmed near Belmont, and an EF0 tornado was confirmed near Aylmer. All three tornadoes occurred within a span of a few hours, associated with a powerful cold front that moved through the region.
Meteorological Context
Environment Canada had issued severe thunderstorm warnings for the area, with conditions conducive to tornado development. The storms produced large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain in addition to the tornadoes. The NTP continues to investigate other potential tornado tracks in the region.
Safety and Preparedness
Residents are reminded to stay alert during severe weather and have a plan in place. Tornado warnings should be taken seriously, and seeking shelter in a basement or interior room on the lowest floor is recommended.
