Scuba Diver Found Dead in Waters Off Gabriola Island
A 66-year-old man was discovered unresponsive in the water near Gabriola Island in British Columbia's southern Gulf Islands on Wednesday afternoon. The incident occurred in Degnen Bay, where the man was swimming approximately 30 meters from shore.
Emergency Response
At around 5 p.m., B.C. Emergency Health Services received a 911 call reporting an unresponsive scuba diver in the water, according to an RCMP news release issued on Friday. Emergency crews arrived at the scene and continued life-saving measures initiated by bystanders, who had located the local man near a mooring buoy.
Despite these efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have stated that the death is not considered suspicious. Investigators reported that the man entered the water alone from the Degnen Bay dock, wearing full scuba equipment, and swam a short distance of less than 30 meters before being observed motionless on the surface for several minutes.
Bystander Actions
Bystanders noticed the man floating motionless and approached by boat, discovering he was not breathing. They immediately began life-saving efforts before emergency responders arrived. The RCMP has not disclosed the cause of death, noting that the coroner is conducting an investigation.
Official Statements
“This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the man’s family and those who were involved in the response,” said Cpl. Brett Urano, RCMP spokesperson. “We would also like to acknowledge the quick actions of bystanders and the coordinated efforts of emergency responders who provided immediate assistance.”
The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
