Sask. Memorial for 1980 Bus Crash Expands on Highway 1

A memorial in southwest Saskatchewan honouring the victims of a tragic 1980 CP Rail crew bus crash is expanding along Highway 1, adding new interpretive features to tell the story of the disaster that claimed 22 lives.

Expanding the Memorial

The original memorial, located near the crash site, has been a place of remembrance for families and the community. The expansion includes additional signage, viewing areas, and informational panels that provide more context about the events of December 1980, when a bus carrying CP Rail workers collided with a train near the town of Gull Lake.

According to officials, the upgrades aim to educate visitors about the tragedy while honouring the victims. The project has been supported by local communities, CP Rail, and the provincial government.

Remembering the Victims

The crash remains one of the deadliest transportation accidents in Saskatchewan history. The expanded memorial will include names of all 22 victims, along with personal stories and photographs contributed by families. A new walking path and rest area will allow travellers to pause and reflect.

“This expansion ensures that future generations will understand the impact of this tragedy,” said a spokesperson for the memorial committee. “It’s about preserving memory and providing a space for healing.”

Community Involvement

Local volunteers and historians have worked together to gather artifacts and records. The project also features a small museum-style exhibit with items from the crash and rescue efforts. The memorial is expected to attract more visitors travelling along Highway 1, a major route through the region.

The expanded memorial is scheduled to be completed by late summer, with a dedication ceremony planned for the anniversary of the crash.
