Windsor officials are seeking public input on proposed climate change adaptation solutions for the Lake Erie shoreline. The initiative aims to address increasing risks from erosion, flooding, and ecosystem degradation driven by climate change.
Community Engagement Opportunities
Residents can participate in virtual town halls and submit feedback online through the city's engagement portal. A series of public meetings will also be held in July to discuss draft plans and gather local knowledge.
Proposed Measures
The adaptation strategy includes natural infrastructure projects such as wetland restoration, dune reinforcement, and living shorelines. Engineered solutions like breakwaters and upgraded drainage systems are also being considered. The plan emphasizes protecting both property and natural habitats.
Climate Challenges on Lake Erie
Lake Erie has experienced record-high water levels and increased storm intensity in recent years, leading to accelerated shoreline erosion and property damage. Harmful algal blooms have also worsened, threatening water quality and aquatic life.
The adaptation plan is part of a broader regional effort to build resilience against climate impacts. Officials stress that community input is vital to ensure solutions are effective and equitable.
Feedback will be accepted until August 15, 2026, with a final plan expected by early 2027.
