North Cowichan closes forest gates as wildfire risk rises

North Cowichan has closed forest access gates across the municipality as wildfire risk increases on Vancouver Island. The decision comes amid dry conditions and elevated fire danger ratings.

Mount Prevost wildfire progress

Firefighters have made headway on a wildfire burning on Mount Prevost west of Duncan, B.C., with officials now reporting the blaze is being held. The fire, which ignited earlier this week, prompted evacuation alerts and road closures.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, crews have established containment lines and are working to extinguish hot spots. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Gate closures and public safety

The Municipality of North Cowichan announced the closure of forest access gates to reduce human-caused fire risk and ensure public safety. The gates will remain closed until conditions improve.

“We urge residents and visitors to respect the closures and avoid forested areas,” said a municipal spokesperson. “The fire danger is very high, and we need everyone’s cooperation to prevent new ignitions.”

Regional fire restrictions

The Coastal Fire Centre has implemented a campfire ban across much of Vancouver Island, including the Cowichan Valley. Open burning is prohibited, and fireworks are not allowed.

Residents are advised to have emergency plans in place and stay informed through local alerts. The wildfire risk is expected to persist as hot and dry weather continues.
