Calgary Zoo Welcomes New Polar Bear Yellé to Wild Canada Exhibit
New Polar Bear Arrives at Calgary Zoo's Wild Canada Zone

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo has announced the arrival of a new polar bear to its Wild Canada Zone, marking an important development in the facility's conservation and animal care programs. Yellé, a 20-year-old male polar bear, arrived on Tuesday from Quebec's Zoo Sauvage de Saint-Félicien and is currently undergoing a standard quarantine period behind the scenes as he acclimates to his new environment.

A Carefully Planned Introduction Process

Following the quarantine period, zoo staff will begin a gradual introduction process between Yellé and the resident polar bear, Siku, who is a 10-year-old male. This careful approach follows established protocols for introducing large carnivores and will be guided by the animals' behavior and comfort levels at each stage.

"Welcoming any new arrival is always an exciting time, but Yellé's arrival is especially meaningful for our team," said Paul Woerner, Animal Care Manager for Wild Canada, in an official statement. "We've been looking for the right companion for Siku, and having Yellé join our zoo family is a moment we've all been eagerly anticipating."

Step-by-Step Introduction Protocol

The introduction process will follow a structured approach designed to ensure the safety and wellbeing of both animals:

  1. Scent exchanges to allow the bears to become familiar with each other's presence
  2. Visual contact through protective barriers
  3. Supervised interactions in shared spaces

"Every step will be guided by careful observation and our knowledge of polar bear behavior to ensure the safety, comfort and wellbeing of both bears," Woerner emphasized.

Context of Previous Polar Bear Incident

Yellé's arrival comes less than two years after the tragic death of Baffin, a seven-year-old polar bear who died following an injury sustained during rough play with Siku in the enclosure's pool. The incident occurred in 2024 when Baffin sustained a crushing bite injury to his trachea.

Following Baffin's death, zoo officials indicated there was no immediate urgency to find a companion for Siku but expressed hope to eventually bring at least one new polar bear to the exhibit. The careful planning surrounding Yellé's introduction reflects lessons learned from previous experiences and the zoo's commitment to animal welfare.

Conservation and Education Mission

Since 2023, the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo has served as an Arctic Ambassador Centre in partnership with Polar Bears International. This designation recognizes the zoo's commitment to raising awareness about the challenges polar bears face in their rapidly changing Arctic habitat due to climate change and other environmental pressures.

Both Yellé and Siku will serve as ambassadors for their species, helping visitors to the Wild Canada Zone understand the importance of polar bear conservation and habitat protection. Their presence provides educational opportunities about Arctic ecosystems and the urgent need for conservation efforts.

Public Viewing and Updates

Yellé is expected to become visible to the public in the Taylor Family Foundation Polar Bear Sanctuary beginning in April. Until that time, the zoo will provide regular updates on the bear's acclimation process through its social media channels and official communications.

The addition of Yellé represents not only an enhancement to the zoo's animal collection but also strengthens its role in polar bear conservation education and research. The careful management of this introduction process demonstrates modern zoo practices that prioritize animal welfare while supporting broader conservation goals.
