Heavy Rainfall Hits Manitoba
Manitoba experienced significant rainfall on Tuesday, with some areas receiving up to 150 millimetres, according to Environment Canada. The stormy weather brought widespread precipitation across the province, leading to localized flooding in low-lying regions.
Rainfall Totals by Region
The highest totals were recorded in the southeastern part of the province, where communities reported between 100 and 150 mm. Central Manitoba saw 50 to 80 mm, while northern areas received 30 to 50 mm. The city of Winnipeg recorded approximately 70 mm of rain.
Environment Canada meteorologist Katherine Dow noted that the rainfall was the result of a slow-moving low-pressure system that stalled over the region. "This system drew moisture from the south, leading to prolonged and intense precipitation," Dow said.
Impacts and Warnings
The heavy rain caused street flooding in several communities, including parts of Winnipeg where some underpasses were temporarily closed. Basement flooding was reported in some homes. No injuries have been reported.
Environment Canada had issued a rainfall warning for much of southern Manitoba on Tuesday, cautioning residents about the potential for localized flooding. The warning has since been lifted as the system moves eastward.
Total rainfall amounts varied significantly across the province, with some areas receiving less than 20 mm. The storm system is expected to bring additional showers to eastern Manitoba on Wednesday before clearing.
