Rescuers Work to Drain Flooded Laos Cave
Rescuers in Laos are making progress in draining a flooded cave in Xaisomboun province, where five villagers have been trapped and two others remain missing. The operation, which began after heavy rains caused flooding, involves pumping water from the cave to create a safe passage for the trapped individuals.
According to officials, the five villagers were located inside the cave on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, and are reported to be in stable condition. However, the search for the two missing individuals continues as teams navigate the challenging terrain and rising water levels.
The rescue effort is being led by local authorities with support from diving experts, including Benz Norrased Palasing Seascout Diving, who provided video footage of the trapped villagers. The operation is expected to take several more days as water levels are gradually reduced.
This incident highlights the dangers of flash flooding in the region, which often affects remote communities. The cause of the flooding is believed to be heavy rainfall that overwhelmed the cave system.
As of now, the rescued villagers are receiving medical attention, and families of the missing are being kept informed. The community remains hopeful that all individuals will be safely recovered.
