Pelican Released After Lengthy Rehabilitation
An American White Pelican that was found injured in Calgary has been released back into the wild after spending seven months in rehabilitation. The bird was cared for by the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, where staff worked to nurse it back to health. Kyla Rae and Melanie Whalen, who were involved in the pelican's care, released the bird at Frank Lake, a suitable habitat for the species.
Rehabilitation Process
The pelican's recovery required extensive medical treatment and monitoring. According to the rehabilitation centre, the bird had sustained injuries that prevented it from flying and foraging. Over the months, the pelican regained strength and was eventually deemed fit for release. The centre emphasized the importance of such efforts in preserving local wildlife populations.
Successful Release
The release was a collaborative effort, with staff ensuring the pelican was in optimal condition before returning it to its natural environment. Frank Lake, located south of Calgary, provides ample food and shelter for pelicans. The centre expressed gratitude to the community for reporting the injured bird and supporting its recovery.
