As Metro Vancouver prepares to welcome travellers from around the world for the upcoming World Cup soccer tournament, Grouse Mountain has unveiled what it expects will hold the record for the largest Canadian flag displayed on a mountain.
Massive Flag Visible Across the Region
The flag measures 160 metres by 80 metres, roughly the size of two football fields, and can be seen across Metro Vancouver and from the air on incoming flights to Vancouver. The temporary installation is expected to remain in place through Canada Day, subject to weather conditions and ongoing monitoring.
Flag to Be Repurposed After Removal
When the flag is taken down, it will be donated to a local non-profit organization and repurposed into quilts and bags, according to Grouse Mountain staff. The flag weighs 3,400 pounds and required more than 100 people to install.
The installation is a partnership with Blast Media Print, which produced the flag and is working with adjudicators to secure a record for the largest flag unfurled on a mountain. Funding for the flag also came from Destination Vancouver and Destination B.C.
Staff say the flag is a symbol of Canadian pride and a welcome to visitors arriving for the World Cup. The giant red and white banner is expected to be a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike during its display.
