Grizzly Bear Family Tears Into Tent at Kananaskis Campground

A bear warning has been issued for Lower Lake Campground in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park after a family of four grizzly bears ripped through an occupied tent on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

Incident Details

According to Alberta Parks, one bear instigated the incident and a person inside the tent used bear spray to scare it off. The agency has limited campers to hard-sided camping accommodations only until at least July 6 at both Lower Lake and Boulton Creek Campground. No tents will be allowed until then.

Safety Measures and Public Advisory

Alberta Parks staff will be monitoring both sites for further bear activity and patrolling for public safety. In the meantime, the agency is advising visitors to be aware of their surroundings, make loud noises when hiking, keep all pets leashed, and carry bear spray while outdoors. Campers are also being reminded to properly store and secure food or attractants in vehicles or bear-proof lockers.
