The Cariboo Regional District has issued an evacuation alert for properties near an out-of-control wildfire in central British Columbia. The alert covers 178.94 square kilometres in the vicinity of the Swede Creek wildfire, located approximately four kilometres southwest of Comstock Lake and about 100 kilometres southwest of Prince George.
Evacuation Alert Details
Regional officials stated that the alert was issued due to the potential danger to life and health from the rapidly spreading blaze. Residents in the affected area are urged to prepare a plan to transport family members or co-workers outside the area if the alert is upgraded to an evacuation order.
Wildfire Status
The Swede Creek wildfire, which ignited on Monday, June 1, 2026, is now estimated to be 13 square kilometres (approximately 1,300 acres) and remains out of control, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service. Fire officials describe it as a highly vigorous surface fire that is expected to spread given strong winds, high temperatures, and dry conditions.
Preparedness Measures
Residents are advised to prepare grab-and-go bags for each household member, containing essential items such as clothing, ready-to-eat food, toiletries, medications, eyeglasses, valuable papers, and keepsakes. These bags should be kept readily available for a quick departure.
Firefighting Efforts
Ground crews and heavy equipment are working to establish fire guards and secure water delivery. Airtankers, skimmers, and helicopters are assisting by applying retardant and dropping water to cool the fire and reduce its intensity. The B.C. Wildfire Service continues to monitor the situation closely.
