A fast-growing wildfire in British Columbia's Fraser Canyon has destroyed multiple buildings at Blue Lake Resort near Boston Bar, with the blaze continuing to expand and threatening the surrounding community.
Resort Devastated by Fire
Shayne Findlay, who captured photographs of the destruction, described the scene as a 'hellstorm.' The Brunswick complex wildfire, which ignited earlier this week, swept through the resort property, leaving several structures in ruins. The exact number of buildings lost has not yet been confirmed by officials, but eyewitness accounts indicate significant damage to cabins and main facilities.
The resort, a popular destination for fishing and outdoor recreation, is located about 200 kilometres northeast of Vancouver. Evacuation orders have been issued for the area as the fire continues to grow.
Wildfire Conditions and Response
The B.C. Wildfire Service reported that the Brunswick complex fire has grown rapidly due to hot, dry conditions and gusty winds. As of Thursday morning, the fire had consumed an estimated 1,500 hectares of forestland. Crews are battling the blaze from the air and on the ground, but steep terrain and limited access have hampered containment efforts.
'We are facing extreme fire behaviour,' said a spokesperson for the B.C. Wildfire Service. 'Our priority is protecting life and property, and we are working closely with local authorities to ensure residents and visitors are evacuated safely.'
Community Impact
The fire has also threatened the small community of Boston Bar, where residents have been placed on evacuation alert. The local emergency operations centre is coordinating with the Red Cross to provide support for evacuees. Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon remains open but could be closed at short notice if conditions worsen.
This wildfire is one of several burning across British Columbia as the province faces an intense start to the fire season. Federal officials are set to provide an update on the national wildfire situation later today.
