Calgary will experience a combination of heat, smoke, and the possibility of thunderstorms on Thursday, according to the Sky Watch Weather Centre. The forecast calls for seasonable temperatures alongside hazy skies due to wildfire smoke.
Thunderstorm Risk and Temperatures
Hit-and-miss showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout the day, with some storms potentially bringing torrential downpours. The five-day outlook indicates average temperatures for this time of year, but the smoke may affect air quality and visibility.
Jodi Hughes, a meteorologist at the Sky Watch Weather Centre, provided the detailed forecast. The weather pattern is typical for July, but the added smoke from regional wildfires creates unusual conditions.
Smoke from Wildfires
The smoky conditions are linked to ongoing wildfires in British Columbia and Alberta. A resort in B.C. lost multiple buildings to a growing wildfire, described as a 'hellstorm' by local officials. The smoke has drifted into Calgary, prompting air quality advisories.
Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities if smoke levels become unhealthy. The forecast suggests the smoke may persist into the weekend, depending on wind patterns.
Five-Day Outlook
The five-day forecast shows a mix of sun and clouds with continued chances of thunderstorms. Daytime highs will hover near seasonal norms, around 22-25°C, with overnight lows near 10°C. The thunderstorm risk decreases by Saturday, but smoke may remain.
Environment Canada has not issued any severe weather warnings for Calgary as of Thursday morning, but localized heavy rain and gusty winds are possible in stronger storms.
