An aggressive black bear was euthanized in Golden Ears Provincial Park after exhibiting dangerous behavior toward campers, according to the BC Conservation Officer Service.
Bear Displayed No Fear of Humans
The bear, described as 'aggressive' and 'habituated,' had been approaching campsites and showing no fear of people. Conservation officers were called to the park after multiple reports of the bear entering campgrounds and ignoring attempts to scare it away.
Officials said the bear had become a public safety risk due to its lack of fear and persistent approach to humans. They determined that relocation was not an option because the bear had already lost its natural wariness of people.
Public Safety Priority
Conservation officers emphasized that the decision to kill the bear was made to protect park visitors. They reminded the public to store food properly and keep a clean campsite to avoid attracting bears.
This incident follows a series of bear encounters in the region this spring, as wildlife emerges from hibernation and searches for food.
Preventive Measures Urged
Park officials urge visitors to carry bear spray, make noise while hiking, and never approach wildlife. Anyone who encounters an aggressive bear should report it immediately to conservation officers.
The bear's carcass was removed from the park, and no further incidents have been reported.
