The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has issued a swimming advisory for Moose Beach in Orillia, Ontario, following water quality tests that revealed elevated bacteria levels. The advisory, posted on June 24, 2026, warns the public that swimming in the area may pose health risks, including skin, eye, and ear infections, as well as gastrointestinal illness.
Health Unit Urges Caution
According to the health unit, water samples collected from Moose Beach exceeded the provincial standard for bacterial counts. The advisory will remain in effect until further notice, with retesting scheduled to monitor conditions. Beachgoers are advised to avoid wading, swimming, or engaging in water activities until the advisory is lifted.
Common Causes and Precautions
High bacteria levels at beaches are often caused by heavy rainfall, which can wash contaminants such as animal waste, sewage overflows, or agricultural runoff into the water. The health unit recommends checking local water quality reports before visiting any beach and to avoid swimming for at least 48 hours after heavy rain. Signs have been posted at Moose Beach to alert visitors of the advisory.
