Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) has opened a second claims centre in Winnipeg to handle the surge in claims resulting from a severe spring storm that struck the city on June 9, 2026. The storm produced golf ball-sized hail in the Elmwood area, causing widespread damage to vehicles and property.
Storm Impact and Claims Surge
The hailstorm, which hit the Winnipeg area in early June, left many residents with damaged cars and homes. MPI reported a significant increase in claims, prompting the insurance provider to establish an additional location to expedite the process. The new claims centre is designed to accommodate the high volume of affected policyholders.
According to MPI, the storm's intensity was unusual for the season, with hail stones measuring up to golf ball size. The Elmwood neighbourhood was particularly hard hit, with residents describing the hail as "relentless" and "damaging."
Response and Support
MPI stated that the second centre would help reduce wait times and provide better service to customers. "We understand the stress this storm has caused, and we are committed to helping our customers as quickly as possible," an MPI spokesperson said. The new centre is staffed with additional adjusters to handle the influx.
Residents are encouraged to file claims online or visit one of the two centres. MPI has also extended hours at both locations to accommodate those affected.
