Five Must-See Saskatoon Theatre Shows in May 2026
Five Must-See Saskatoon Theatre Shows in May 2026

May brings a rich variety of local entertainment to Saskatoon, with five distinct theatre performances offering something for everyone. From supernatural comedy to a world premiere historical journey, a series of mini plays, a comedic murder mystery, and a quirky family comedy, the city's stages are alive with creativity.

Persephone Theatre: Blithe Spirit

Persephone Theatre closes its season with Noël Coward's comedy Blithe Spirit. The story follows socialite and novelist Charles, who invites an eccentric medium to his home for a dinner party. The séance succeeds, and Charles finds his marriage in jeopardy when the ghost of his first wife returns. While Charles tries to get rid of the ghost, she is determined to eliminate his new wife.

Director Skye Brandon notes, "If we do our jobs, audiences will begin to laugh early, and the laughter will continue to grow. Coward wrote Blithe Spirit during World War II as an escape from the news. It feels like we could use the same today." Recommended for ages 12 and older, the play runs until May 10. Tickets range from $31.07 to $71.04, available at persephonetheatre.org.

Burnt Thicket Theatre and Gordon Tootoosis Nīkānīwin Theatre: Apples and Train Tracks

This co-production presents the world premiere of Apples and Train Tracks by Arnolda Dufour Bowes. Inspired by Bowes's father, who was haunted by memories of his community being forced onto railcars during Road Allowance Métis displacement, the play explores love and self-discovery. Charlie, in his mid-30s, grapples with intergenerational trauma and finds himself at a crossroads in his work and marriage. He seeks to build a future while confronting what he has been chasing—or running from—his entire life.

Director Roxanne Dicke describes it as "an amazing journey through time, history, and identity. It's a joy to explore this original piece with astounding artists. I can't wait for the audience to take this powerful trip with us, honouring the past and embracing the future through healing, humour, and love." The play runs until May 10 at The Refinery. Viewer discretion is advised. Tickets are $10 to $50, available at burntticket.com or gtnt.ca.

25th Street Theatre: Behind Closed Doors

25th Street Theatre presents Behind Closed Doors, a collection of six short plays by six local playwrights. The production features all scripts from the 2026 playwriting development program, highlighting human experiences in everyday spaces—whispers in a bathroom stall, a personal connection on a bus ride, a debate in a coffee shop. These mini plays offer intimate glimpses into private moments.

Performances take place at various unique locations around Saskatoon, adding an immersive element. Check the theatre's website for specific venues and times. Tickets and more information are available at 25thstreettheatre.org.

Additional Shows

Two other productions round out the month: a comedic murder mystery at a local venue and a quirky family comedy at another. Details for these shows can be found through local theatre listings. Saskatoon's theatre scene in May promises laughter, reflection, and entertainment for all ages.
