Sophie Turner Cast as Lara Croft in Prime Video's Tomb Raider Series
Sophie Turner is the new Lara Croft for Prime Video

The iconic video game heroine Lara Croft is preparing for a new adventure, and she will be portrayed by a major star. Prime Video has officially unveiled its first look at the forthcoming live-action Tomb Raider series, with Sophie Turner stepping into the legendary role.

From Westeros to Ancient Tombs

According to industry reports, the 29-year-old British actress, best known for her role as Sansa Stark in HBO's global phenomenon Game of Thrones, will lead the series as the brainy and formidable treasure hunter. The project was officially greenlit in May 2024, with Turner's casting first reported the following November. The series is now actively in production.

Turner will not be navigating perilous ruins alone. The ensemble cast boasts significant star power, including the legendary Sigourney Weaver, whose own history of portraying strong female action heroes adds a compelling layer to the production. Other confirmed cast members are Martin Bobb-Semple, Jason Isaacs, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie, and August Wittgenstein.

A Creative Powerhouse Behind the Scenes

The series is in highly experienced hands. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the acclaimed creator and star of Fleabag, is serving as the creator, writer, and an executive producer. She will co-showrun the series with Chad Hodge. Directing and executive producing duties will be handled by Jonathan van Tulleken.

On the production side, the series is executive produced by Crystal Dynamics (the longtime studio behind the Tomb Raider games), Waller-Bridge, and Jenny Robins via Wells Street Productions. They are joined by Story Kitchen and Legendary Television. The show is produced by Story Kitchen, Crystal Dynamics, and Amazon MGM Studios, where Waller-Bridge currently holds an overall deal.

A Franchise in Full Swing

The Tomb Raider franchise, which began with the groundbreaking video game in 1996, continues to be a major force in entertainment. The most recent core game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, launched in 2018, but the property has remained active through remasters.

Fans have even more to look forward to, as two brand-new video game titles—Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst—are slated for release in 2026 and 2027, respectively. The Prime Video series was developed under a specific pact between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios, facilitated by Story Kitchen's first-look deal, which aims to expand the Tomb Raider universe across television and film.

This new series marks a significant return for Lara Croft to the screen, promising a fresh interpretation led by a new generation of talent both in front of and behind the camera.
