MSNBC host Chris Hayes erupted in laughter on Monday as he dismantled Donald Trump's unsubstantiated theory that the algae bloom and peeling paint in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool were the result of deliberate sabotage. The pool's deterioration comes just days after a $14 million renovation project was completed.
Trump's Vandalism Claim Lacks Evidence
Trump alleged that vandals "went in there with a knife" to damage the pool's lining and dumped fertilizer to accelerate algae growth. However, he provided no proof to support these accusations. Hayes highlighted the absurdity of the explanation, mocking the idea of a coordinated attack.
"He's claiming that saboteurs, I don't know, under the cover of night, maybe Antifa super soldiers, outfitted in scuba gear, climbing on their bellies with box cutters cutting a 250-foot-long gash in the pool's bottom that Trump previously claimed was uncuttable," Hayes joked.
Hayes: 'This Is Insane'
Hayes did not stop at sarcasm. He directly condemned the blame-shifting, stating: "This is insane. This is madness. No one's dumping things in the reflecting pool to grow algae. It's their own incompetent, corrupt failures blooming for all the world to see, cracking and floating to the surface. All of it."
He further criticized the administration's approach to governance: "It's just the most literal manifestation of how these people go about everything. And now they have to create this dark conspiracy and use the force of law to pursue it. These people are desperately seeking someone else to blame for Trump's malfeasance."
No Evidence of Sabotage
As of now, no credible evidence has emerged to support Trump's claims. The National Park Service has not confirmed any vandalism, and the cause of the algae and peeling paint remains unclear. The $14 million renovation was intended to modernize the pool, but its rapid deterioration has raised questions about the project's execution.
