Vancouver Magician Gabriella Lester, 21, Joins Global Now You See Me Live Tour
Vancouver's Gabriella Lester Stars in Now You See Me Live

A young magician from Vancouver is captivating audiences worldwide as she takes her place among the globe's top illusionists. Gabriella Lester, a 21-year-old performer born in South Africa and raised in British Columbia, recently graced the stage of the Sydney Opera House as part of the prestigious international cast for Now You See Me Live.

From Port Moody Classrooms to the World Stage

Lester's path to magic began early. She knew by the age of 10 that illusion was her calling, performing for anyone who would watch, including her classmates at school in Port Moody. Her dedication was so intense that she developed carpal tunnel syndrome from over-shuffling cards at 12 and found herself in the principal's office more than once for practicing tricks during class.

Her prodigious talent caught the eye of renowned Canadian magician Shawn Farquhar, who became her mentor. This guidance propelled her to a professional debut at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas at just 14 years old, where she performed Harry Houdini's famed upside-down straitjacket escape.

A Rising Star in Magic and Film

Lester's resume reads like that of a seasoned veteran. Beyond Las Vegas, she has delivered TEDx Talks, been featured in The New York Times, and impressed the legendary duo on Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Her variation on the straitjacket escape was so remarkable that it led to a job as an associate producer on the show in 2024.

Her expertise extends behind the scenes as a magic consultant for films, including Hallmark's We Need a Little Christmas and Disney's Descendants. She even merges her passion for motorcycle sports with her career, working as a stunt double.

Leading the Horsemen in a High-Tech Spectacle

The new Now You See Me Live theatre show is based on Lionsgate's blockbuster film franchise, which has earned over C$950 million across three movies. The live adaptation is a high-tech experience featuring grand illusions, stunts, and sleight-of-hand.

In this global production, Lester holds a unique position as the youngest and sole female cast member playing one of the iconic "Horsemen." She performs alongside illusionists from the United States, France, and Italy.

"It's definitely an honour to be selected," Lester said, reflecting on her inclusion in the international tour. "But it does feel like something I've always been doing." For this young Vancouver magician, the international stage is not a destination, but a natural next step in a magical journey that began with a deck of cards and a dream.
