Spencer Krug, best known as a singer and songwriter for Wolf Parade, has released his fourth solo album in six years, titled Same Fangs. The album features deeply personal and meta songwriting, including the curiously titled track Listening to Music in Cars 2.5 (All the Tired Horses), which breaks the fourth wall by explaining its own origin.
A Meta Songwriting Approach
Krug describes the song as "very heady, it is meta, it's very self-concerned." It recounts the story of a previous song, Listening to Music in Cars, which was inspired by Sunset Rubdown's 2023 reunion tour. That tour was a joyful experience, with the band bonding over Bob Dylan's All the Tired Horses. However, a subsequent tour in 2025 proved to be a "grinder," reviving old tensions and leading Krug to rewrite the song in a more melancholic vein.
Autobiographical Themes
Same Fangs is Krug's most autobiographical work to date. Songs like Timebomb reflect on the difficulties of band life, while Berserker Mode touches on watching a friend repeat mistakes. Secret Bridge explores settling into family life, and Souvenirs is a tender love song for his wife. Even the quasi-political Real Long Headlock focuses on personal despair rather than sloganeering.
Life on Vancouver Island
Krug now lives in a rural area on Vancouver Island with his wife and six-year-old son. Now 49, he says "things are quieting down" in his life, leading to more introspection. The album's cover art features Krug with his son on his shoulders, symbolizing this new chapter.
Despite the personal nature of the album, Krug acknowledges that some tracks may be challenging for casual listeners. "Even my hardcore fans will have to dissect it a little bit if they really want to understand it," he says.
