PUP Celebrates New Album with 3 Vancouver Shows

Toronto-based rock band PUP is marking the release of their powerful new album, Who Will Look After the Dogs?, with a trio of highly anticipated live performances in Vancouver this November.

A Triumphant Return to the West Coast

The band, whose name ironically stands for Pathetic Use of Potential, continues to defy its own moniker with a relentless work ethic and a fiercely dedicated global fanbase. The Vancouver concert series kicks off with an all-ages show on November 24 at the Pearl, featuring a special performance by Juno-winning Indigenous rap duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids. PUP will then headline their own shows on November 25 and 26 at the historic Commodore Ballroom, promising an explosive showcase of their latest material.

From Acoustic Roots to Heavy Rock Anthems

Since their self-titled debut in 2012, the quartet—fronted by vocalist and guitarist Stefan Babcock, alongside Nestor Chumak, Steve Sladkowski, and Zack Mykula—has built a reputation for a blistering live act. Their sound, a potent blend of post-hardcore and noise rock, was recently demonstrated on the North American leg of Sum 41's farewell tour, where they served as the opening act.

The creative process for their latest album highlights the band's dynamic range. The single Olive Garden exemplifies this, beginning as a simple acoustic number penned by Babcock before drummer Mykula pushed it into heavier territory. The result is a track that encapsulates the band's signature style.

There’s a real magic in the way these sweet vocal melodies are bludgeoned by a wall of disgusting, grinding, detuned guitars, Babcock revealed. The whole song is kinda upsetting and uncomfortable but also, catchy and fun.

Looking After 'The Dogs': An Interview with Stefan Babcock

In a conversation ahead of the Vancouver shows, Babcock delved into the inspiration behind the album's poignant title, Who Will Look After the Dogs?

It came from the first lyric I wrote for the song Hallways, which was the first sentence put down when I started writing the new record in the depths of despair, he explained. It’s both funny and quite heartbreaking, which fits the essence of this band and this record.

With five albums released over a productive 13-year career, the notion of unfulfilled potential seems laughably inaccurate. When confronted with this, Babcock reflected on the band's journey with a mix of pride and realism.

I’m very proud, lucky and fortunate to have this position of being in this band with these guys and what we have achieved, he said. But life is relentless and you have to be able to consider that you might be reaching some level in one area but still underperforming everywhere else. Truthfully, I’m probably in the one percentile of easiest lives to live on the planet at the moment.

Fans in Vancouver can expect a raw, energetic, and unforgettable performance as PUP brings their new album to life on stage.
