To commemorate the 10-year anniversary of The Tragically Hip’s final cross-Canada tour, a new live album is being released featuring songs recorded during the 15-date farewell trek. The album, titled The Tragically Hip: Live July 22 – August 20, 2016, will be released on August 21.
The final show of the Man Machine Poem tour, held in Kingston, Ontario, will also be rebroadcast by the CBC and globally livestreamed on August 22 at 7 p.m. local time. The broadcast, titled A National Celebration, will air commercial-free on CBC TV, CBC Gem, and both CBC Radio services. It will also be available globally on CBC Music’s YouTube channel and throughout North America on SiriusXM channels.
Historic concert reaches millions
The Kingston finale reached millions of Canadians, with one-third of the country tuning in to participate in the event. Fans filled arenas, gathered in public squares, and watched from living rooms and phones. “It is hard to put into words how meaningful it was for CBC to broadcast The Tragically Hip concert to an audience of millions 10 years ago,” said Sally Catto, CBC’s general manager of entertainment, in a statement. “The Hip will always have a unique, special relationship with their fans, and we’re honoured to relive this historic concert again this summer.”
